Bolivian gas export returns to normal after attacks

Natural gas exports from Bolivia to Argentina have returned to normal levels after protesters attacked and damaged a pipeline, according to a statement issued by the Bolivian government.

Bolivia normally exports between 1.5 million to 2.0 million cubic meters per day to neighbouring Argentina, but the flow was reduced to around 1.2 million cubic meters after the attack.

On September 11 technicians were forced to close down a pipeline after anti-government protesters stormed a control station. Supplies to Brazil were also reduced on September 10 after protesters attacked and damaged a pipeline valve. Gas flow was also halved for several hours after protesters damaged a valve on a pipeline operated by Transierra, which is owned by Petrobras, Total, Repsol and Bolivian state oil company YPFB.

Bolivian President Evo Morales is locked in a bitter dispute with opposition governors who are demanding autonomy for the gas-rich region, who also oppose his plans to implement a new constitution which the Bolivian government claim will give more power to the poor and indigenous population.
