Two British security guards have leapt overboard from a chemical tanker detained by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, according to British diplomats.
A German naval helicopter rescued the two Britons from the sea along with another crew member. It has been suggested that pirates have taken control of the Liberian registered ship along with its crew of at least 28.
The International Maritime Bureau said the Liberian-flagged vessel was captured in the early hours of November 28 in the Gulf of Aden. The tanker was hijacked in the narrow shipping lane between Somalia and Yemen, the same stretch of water where numerous attacks have taken place recently.
Over a dozen ships are being held to ransom at present, including the Saudi-owned super tanker the Sirius Star, which has two Britons amongst the crew on board.
However, a Greek freighter and her Filipino crew have been released by the pirates. According to a Philippines official, the crew were all reported to be "in good condition".
