Egypt - Military free kidnapped tourists

A group of 11 Western tourists who were seized on September 19 have been released after a mission by the Egyptian military.

The group - made up of five Italians, five Germans and one Romanian, as well as eight local guides - are all believed to be in good health.

Government officials said the group, who were abducted in a remote border region of Egypt, were freed near the Sudan border with Chad, and that half of the kidnappers were killed in the attack. It is believed that no ransom was paid.

The tourists were taken to a military base in Cairo and greeted by Egyptian government officials and foreign diplomats, before being taken for medical checks.

Authorities in Sudan had been tracking the kidnappers through a remote mountainous region that covers the borders of Egypt, Sudan and Libya, since the tourists were seized 10 days earlier.

The kidnappers were demanding a ransom in the region of £5m, and had been negotiating with German officials via satellite telephone, but Egyptian officials reported that no money had exchanged hands.
