Indian Bomb Blasts Death Toll Rises

Seventeen bomb blasts in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on 26 July have now claimed 49 lives and wounded over 100, according to police who are still hunting the attackers.

The blasts were detonated with timers in two phases within an hour, hitting market places, residential areas and public transport. The second series of explosions caught a number of victims and their helpers arriving at hospitals. It is suspected the explosions were caused by home-made devices, and several unexploded bombs have since been found. Two further unexploded bombs were also found nearby in Surat.

Reports suggest a relatively unknown Islamist group, the Indian Mujahideen, has claimed responsibility for the attacks by an email sent to a television station. Security forces carried out a raid on a property near Mumbai, the suspected source of the email. A similar email was sent to news channels by the group after explosions in Jaipur in May which killed over 60 people.

The explosions in Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat state, came a day after a number of bombings in Bangalore. The government has deployed an additional 3,000 soldiers and police in Delhi, while other cities, including Mumbai and Jaipur, are on high alert.
