A day after declaring they were "at war" with the military, militants in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region say they have destroyed an oil installation.
A military spokesman confirmed that a flow station belonging to Shell in Alakiri, in Rivers State, was attacked in the early hours of the morning. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said they killed a number of workers and soldiers inside, but the military said they had suffered no losses.
In an email issued to journalists, MEND stated their new campaign would not involve taking hostages. On Sunday, militants said they had "declared war" on the government after battling security forces guarding oil facilities.
The military said it had resisted numerous MEND assaults. Both sides say their opponents experienced heavy losses.
Nigeria's oil output has diminished by more than 20% since MEND's violent campaign for a bigger part of the area's oil wealth began. MEND militants are the most widely visible of numerous armed groups functioning in the impoverished delta region. They regularly kidnap foreign oil workers and sabotage pipelines and oil installations.
Despite the Niger Delta region being the source of most of the Nigerian government's income, it remains blighted by corruption and poverty.
