An Afghan security guard at a courier company in the Afghan capital Kabul has killed two foreigners before shooting himself, government sources say. The incident took place in front of the DHL office and resulted in two other people also being injured.
Interior Minister Mohammed Hanif Atmar said the motive for the attack was still uncertain, but did not rule out terrorist actions. The two dead foreigners were British and South African employees of DHL. Many foreign nationals live in the Sher Pur area of the city where the shootings took place.
The dead Briton was named by the UK Foreign Office as David Giles. DHL confirmed the second dead employee as South African national Jason Bresler. The company has closed its office in Kabul while a police investigation is carried out although reports suggest that branches elsewhere in Afghanistan have stayed open.
The shooting comes only days after foreign aid worker Gayle Williams, 34, who had South African and British nationality, was shot dead in Kabul in an attack alleged to have been carried out by the Taleban. They justified the killing on the grounds that she had been working for a Christian group.
The DHL shooting happened at approximately 0830 on Saturday outside the office on a busy street. It appeared that the two foreigners had been killed inside a four-wheel-drive car which stood spattered with blood at the scene. It was later covered with plastic sheeting by police.
According to an earlier report, a row had broken out between the foreigners and some Afghans just prior to the shooting. Information about the two injured people was not immediately available.
A correspondent in Kabul says that until recently the centre of the Afghan capital has been considered relatively safe. However, he added that the latest attacks will raise serious safety and security concerns, especially among foreigners.
