At least 16 people have been killed in a double car bomb attack on the US embassy in Yemen, according to Yemeni officials. The attack is the second on the embassy this year.

Militants, reportedly dressed as policemen, exchanged gunfire with guards and targeted the main security gate, but failed to breach the compound walls.

Six members of the Yemeni security forces, four bystanders and six militants were killed in the attack, which took place around 0830 in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital. US officials have confirmed that no Americans were among the casualties.

A White House spokesman said the US would continue working alongside the Yemeni government to "increase our counter-terrorism activities to prevent more attacks from taking place".

A militant group calling itself the Islamic Jihad in Yemen claimed responsibility for the bombings, and has warned it will continue attacks until its jailed members are released. The authenticity of the claim has not yet been verified.
