South African tourists kidnapped in Yemen

Tribal chiefs are undertaking negotiations with Yemeni kidnappers in an attempt to secure the release of a South African woman and her two sons who were seized by armed men on January 2. Sources say tribal negotiations are being conducted with the kidnappers along with the participation of local security officers.

The kidnappers, who belong to the Al Fadl tribe, are demanding the release of a relative who has been arrested for a "work related fault" and is being held in custody in Sanaa, according to security officials.

The tourists are believed to be part of a convoy travelling to the southern port city of Aden from the eastern region of Hadramut, which was attacked by armed tribesmen in Abyan province. The car carrying the tourists had fallen behind the convoy, allowing the tribesmen to seize their vehicle in Shaqra district, 95 miles east of Aden.

Tribesmen in Yemen have kidnapped over 200 foreigners over the past 15 years. Although ransom demands are normally met and hostages are released unharmed, three Britons and an Australian were killed in 1998 when security forces attempted to release them by force.
