Several members of a group alleged to be planning a terrorist attack in the Gulf state of Bahrain have been arrested, according to a statement released by the state security.
The statement said the group were planning to detonate explosives containing flammable materials and large amounts of small iron balls, in an attack deliberately timed to coincide with Bahrain's national day celebrations.
No numbers or identities of those arrested have so far been released.
Bahrain has never been the scene of any major terrorist incident, unlike its neighbour Saudi Arabia, which it is linked to by a causeway, The kingdom, where the US Fifth Fleet is based, has around 5,000 US residents, mostly military personnel and their families.
In December last year there were clashes in the Sunni-ruled state between police and protesters, with 11 Shiite activists sentenced to jail terms of between one and seven years in July this year for their involvement in the incident.
The clashes followed the death of a demonstrator at an opposition rally to demand compensation for victims of alleged human rights violations in the 1980s and 1990s.
