Two French expatriates kidnapped in Niger Delta

Nigerian gunmen have kidnapped two French workers near Nigeria's oil industry hub of Port Harcourt in the troubled Niger Delta, according to reports from military and security sources.

Late on Saturday 2 August over a dozen gunmen attacked a local bar in Onne, exchanging fire with military personnel, which resulted in at least three deaths. The French Foreign Ministry has confirmed that two of its citizens have been kidnapped, though it is not yet known who the two French expatriates worked for.

Insecurity in the region has cut crude output by around twenty percent since militants launched a campaign of sabotage in 2006. Gangs have taken advantage of the breakdown in law and order, kidnapping foreign workers, businessmen and local politicians for ransom. Over 200 foreign workers have been seized in the Niger Delta, the heart of Nigeria's oil sector, since the troubles began, although almost all have been released unharmed.

Last month, two Germans working for Nigerian construction firm Julius Berger were kidnapped, which prompted the company to suspend its operations in the region.
